This information was obtained through nonblind interviews with family members when possible (twenty-nine of fifty-five bulimic patients) and otherwise through interviews with the patient. Among the 251 first-degree relatives of the 55 bulimic patients, 41 (16 percent) had a major affective disorder. The morbid risk for affective disorder in first-degree relatives did not differ significantly between bulimia and bipolar disorder but was significantly lower in the other comparison psychiatric groups.
