american history essay
The problems of labor-capital relations begin to assume an everincreasing importance in American history. At first this vast transformation in our economy and mode of social existence was obscured by the master-and-servant ideologies carried over from the days of the guilds with their handicrafts and petty manufacture. So deeply ingrained were those modes of thought which were derived from the economic relationships first developed in the towns of the Middle Ages, that for many years organizations of working men banded together for their own protection were considered as illegal combinations in restraint of trade.

The direct consequences of that struggle was to preserve the Union and to break the power of the slavocracy. At the same time there was settled affirmatively and with finality the proposition that the powers of government were equal to the emergency which confronted the nation, and that none would be heard to cavil at the scope or nature of these powers in the face of imminent danger. Among the far-reaching indirect consequences of the war was the endowment with the amplitude of state power the leaders of industrial capitalism, who were to dominate the course of American history until the financial collapse of 1929.

Somehow the Byronic young poet made his way to Boston, where he published Tamerlane and Other Poems. This is the most famous collectors' item in American literature; but although it treats the now familiar themes of love, beauty, pride, and the death of a beautiful woman, it gives few indications of poetic genius. Under stress of necessity, Poe enlisted in the United States Army, giving his name as Edgar A. Perry. Part of the next two years he spent at Fort Moultrie near Charleston. At the end of his period of service he had risen to sergeant major and his superiors testified to his good habits and to his competence.

After some delay Poe entered West Point late in June, 1830. Meanwhile Frances Allan was dead and her husband was on the point of marrying again. There was no longer any hope of an inheritance in Richmond. The West Point routine became a bore. Many of the students were younger or less mature than Poe, and he did not have the leisure he had had in the regular army. He learned to his disappointment that his previous service would not reduce the time necessary to secure his commission as lieutenant, and he probably concluded that even with a commission it would be difficult to live on a lieutenant's pay.

Agency commissions from media are often supplemented by service fees paid by clients. The commission is intended to cover the service cost of preparing and placing advertising. It does not provide payment for extensive marketing research work, elaborate art work or engravings prepared outside the agency, talent for radio or television entertainment, preparation of special signs or dealer-helps, or other special services rendered or procured by the agency for the client. For such services it is customary for the agency to levy special charges based on the cost of the services plus some percentage fee agreed upon at the time the relationship is established.

If a store's business consists chiefly of one kind of merchandise, such as men's coats and suits, typewriters, shoes, musical instruments, or cameras, the goods are bought by retailers, and consequently sold to them by manufacturers, in large quantities. Instead of buying a quarter of a dozen suits once or twice a week, a men's clothing store usually places several major orders per year. "Fill-in" orders may be placed by mail without any personal contact between the merchant and a manufacturer's sales representative. Essentially the same situation obtains in industrial marketing. Even quite small manufacturing plants have large purchasing requirements of certain types of materials entering directly into manufacture, owing to the typical highly specialized character of output of the small factory.

While transportation is a function necessarily performed in the marketing of all goods, it is especially costly and of unusual strategic significance in the marketing of those products which are relatively heavy or bulky, require some special form of transportation service, or must be moved considerable distances. The cost of transportation is ordinarily, however, more than offset by two distinct types of economies in the production of form utility. One is occupational and technical division of labor, the advantages of which can exist only under large-scale operation. With but few exceptions, industries that sell exclusively in the communities of their location cannot be operated on the most efficient scale.

While transportation and storage have long been recognized as major marketing functions, a discerning awareness of their close interrelationship and their effect upon other marketing functions is a relatively recent development in the field of business management. This is explained in part by the nature of the challenge facing business leaders at different times. At an early stage of our modern industrial development, and continuing to the 1920's, the great challenge was to meet the demand of expanding markets through technology. Emphasis was largely upon engineering innovation in the field of manufacturing. During and since the 1920's, with manufacturing capacity generally outstripping effective market demand, business leaders became more interested in the selling function.

Lack of appreciation for physical distribution as a total system is also explained by the compartmentized responsibility for specific functions in business firms. For example, a traffic manager may have the job of doing everything possible to minimize transportation costs. A warehousing manager may be judged on his ability to keep storage and handling costs low. A recommendation on the part of the traffic manager, oriented to the goal of lower transportation costs, might easily lead to an increase in the amount of necessary storage activity on the part of his employer or the firm's customers in the channel of distribution.

The complexities of physical distribution are examined by giving separate attention to various special features of and institutional arrangements for transportation and storage. Excluded from this discussion are matters which are largely technical or operational in nature. Emphasis is focused upon considerations which relate to alternative means of accomplishing part of the marketing task within the business enterprise, and which are also of social and economic interest because they have a bearing upon the way in which the wants of consumers are satisfied and upon the efficiency with which the marketing system operates.
